Program Community Advisory Board Debbie Alter-Starr, M.S.W., L.C.S.W.
Debbie Alter Starr is a social worker, bilingual community organizer, and the parent of two gifted children. Debbie has worked extensively on gifted education, emotional health, and prevention issues, creating many policy changes and opportunities in the Napa Valley Unified School District and surrounding areas. Using a community engagement model, Debbie has helped schools understand that working together, schools and community members can have positive planning experiences and create better outcomes. She develops programs that teach children skills to manage emotions and their own learning experiences. Debbie is excited to be on this advisory board, and happy that Bay Area gifted children can attend a camp where they will have the support they need in order to be able to relax and enjoy themselves. Anne Beneventi
Anne Beneventi has a lifelong passion for working with gifted children. She taught for several years at The Nueva School, which serves gifted children, and co-founded schools in Berkeley, California and Alexandria, Egypt. In 2002, she was certified as a Master Practitioner of The Annemarie Roeper Method of Qualitative Assessment. Currently, Anne assesses children in her private practice and consults with parents and teachers to provide appropriate educational and emotional support for gifted children. She also evaluates applicants as the Admissions Director at Helios New School, which serves gifted children. She serves on the board of Gifted Homeschoolers Forum and is on the staff of the Gifted Development Center's California Testing Clinic.
Dana Cope Dana Cope is thrilled to be on the Camp Summit Advisory Board. She has spent the last fourteen years thankful to be a part of the teaching profession. Dana has spent most of this time teaching Kindergarten through fifth grade and most recently became Napa Valley Unified's GATE TOSA, New Teacher Support Consultant, and Teacher Trainer. She enjoys facilitating children along their educational journeys and appreciates each stage of development. Finding opportunities to help youth discover their passions is what truly drives Dana's participation in this project.
Kathleen D. Crombie, M.A., M.Ed.
Kathleen D. Crombie earned Master of Arts and Master of Education in Counseling Psychology degrees from Teachers College-Columbia University in New York. She works at Alta Bates Summit Medial Center in the departments of Psychiatry and High-Risk Pregnancy in Women and Infant Services, Berkeley, California. Kathleen is the President of the Board of Directors for Piedmont GATE Parent Support. She is a Co-Facilitator of a SENG-Model Parent Support Group in Walnut Creek and Oakland, California, as well as a certified trainer for SENG-Model groups. She is a member of NAGC, CAG, and SENG. She has two gifted children in public school and teaches art. Jennifer Dees
Jennifer Dees is the co-founder of San Francisco Bay Area Gifted Homeschoolers. She was active in both gifted communities and homeschooling communities for years before finding a way to bring these two interests together. She has homeschooled her daughter since 2002 and has found it an exhilarating experience. She led a Girl Scout troop for her daughter's benefit and together they participated in the service learning organization, Roots & Shoots. She was an organizer for PG Retreat, a camp for families with profoundly gifted children, building its Web site and attending with her daughter. Jennifer has been delighted to see her daughter become part of the Yunasa gifted camp community. She and her daughter look forward to helping build the Camp Summit community. Mika Gustavson, MA, MFT
Mika Gustavson is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in helping the gifted to thrive. A certifed SENG-Model Parent Group Facilitator, she leads groups for parents of gifted, twice-exceptional, anxious and intense children, as well as providing trainings and presentations for parents, educators and other professionals on issues related to giftedness. Her articles have been published in the 2e Newsletter, the NAGC UK magazine and the California Homeschooler. She is active on the Gifted Homeschooler Forum's Professional Outreach Committee, and is a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, the California Association for the Gifted and MENSA. She also works with individuals and families in her private practice in San Jose, where she lives with her husband, son, two cats, two guinea pigs and a dog, some gifted, some 2e, and all beloved. Nancy Knop, Ph.D., Certificate in Educational Therapy
Nancy Knop brings to the Camp Summit Advisory Board her experience as Camp Director for motivated and gifted middle school girls at Stanford Sally Ride Science Camps from 2007 to 2009, working for Education Unlimited. Dr. Knop taught science in grades 7–12 at Head Royce School in Oakland, California from 1983–2006. After completing a graduate-level certification program at U.C. Berkeley Extension in 2003, she also worked as an Educational Therapist, expanding this career after retiring from teaching and moving to West Virginia. She returned to California to join Summit Center in January 2010.
