Frequently Asked Questions What is the Camp Summit ratio of Staff/Counselors to campers? Our ratio of Camp Summit Staff/Counselors to campers is 1:8. In addition, we have three Teen Counselors who have outstanding leadership abilities and who have extensive experience with other highly regarded camps for gifted children. What are the sleeping arrangements at Camp Summit? Campers will be bunking in dorms segregated by gender. Each dorm has bunk beds and one large shower/restroom area — similar to what is found in a gym or workout facility (although a bit more rustic). What criteria is used to determine "giftedness?" There is no criteria. We rely on self-selection. Who will chaperone campers at night? Each dorm will have camp Staff and Counselors — as outlined above and designated by gender — sleeping in the dorms with the campers. How will Camp Summit groups be arranged? We will arrange groups by taking into account the interests, ages, and abilities of individual campers. Groups will be mixed-age and mixed-gender. Requests for friends and siblings to be grouped together will be considered on an individual basis. Our goal is to make each camper’s experience the best possible. Will adults be able to reach their campers by phone? Will campers be allowed to phone home? We hope that the campers will be as immersed in the camp experience and the natural environment as much as possible. Therefore, we ask that calls be kept to an emergency basis, unless otherwise arranged. Parents and guardians will always be able to phone in should an emergency arise, and we will accommodate a child’s need to phone home on an individual basis. Are campers allowed to use cell phones, MP3 players, and other electronic media? Camp Summit’s foundation is based on an exploration of the inner and outer nature of our campers. We plan to be out-of-doors quite a bit and immersed in group activities. To focus on participation at camp, we ask that cell phones and gaming equipment be left at home. However, MP3 players, iPods, and similar devices for listening to and sharing music are welcome, and can be great for campers’ “feet-on-the-bunk” afternoon time for reflection and relaxation. Can Camp Summit accommodate special dietary considerations? Absolutely. The Marin Headlands kitchen is known for its high-quality, locally grown produce and meals that provide accommodations for vegetarians, vegans, and those who are lactose-intolerant or have other dietary requirements. Every meal has multiple entrées, fruit and vegetable, and pastry or dessert choices. Other needs will be accommodated on an individual basis.
